Whole genome sequencing is different than targeted sequencing, because it looks across the entire mappable genome of an organism. In comparison, targeted sequencing is often limited to a subset of genes of interest. WGS includes coverage of all coding and non-coding regions, regulatory sequences, and inter- and intra-genic portions of the genome.
